Lost in the Land
Images, Ideas and Energies
Discovered in the Remote
Landscape of the West
By D.H.Elzer
Wildcraft Forest – Artists Edition
This book is a vision; an extraordinary collection of images and observations that serve as vignettes into the unique personality and ideas of British Columbia artist, writer and activist D.H.Elzer. Largely influenced by his close connection to nature in the rural and remote areas of British Columbia and western North America; Elzer has been refining his craft for the past 35 years. He is a wildcrafter who has become well-known for his inventions using natural materials and wild botanicals found in nature.
Elzer has been an early advocate for the preservation of medicinal plants in wilderness areas. As an activist, he has been demanding that governments everywhere protect biodiversity so that ecosystems can generate their natural medicines for the good of the planet.
This significant work contains images, articles, poems, prayers, short stories, field notes and ideas, illuminating his experiences in nature that have inspired him as well as fuelled his activism to preserve wilderness habitat and the cultures that are connected to the land.
“Our conflicts tend to emerge in pairs: rural vs. urban; development vs. ecology; private vs. public; and so on. At the core of all these conflicts are two underlying positions that drive the way individuals perceive the present, and the future: one of the “naïve optimist”; and the other is grounded within the landscape and stewardship that I call the “conservative ecologist”. The two are almost tribal in nature and behavior, with their own respective cultures, interests and moral values. Both factions are struggling for elements of control so that they may determine who will play the dominant role in our future and the future of this planet.”
After hundreds of published articles, this is the first pictorial of Elzer’s creative endeavors, and it is mixed with poetry, thoughts and experiences that have been driven by struggles and inspirations that he has experienced in his travels and work. In his book, he questions the body politic that controls remote areas as well as the hidden energies that are present within the land.
“I have come to realize that in these remote places that inspire me, are people that have developed their own unique political expressions connected to the land. I have found that these connections have influenced my visual compositions and the subject matter that I have expressed. Knowing a place is different than just being there; to know a place is to be a part of its soul and its voice – when this happens it changes our entire insight about everything.”
This first Artists Edition of Lost in the Land by D.H.Elzer is published as an e-book by Canadian publishers, Wildcraft Forest.
